ROBERT DICK is a creative virtuoso in the tradition of Paganini and Hendrix, artists who not only mastered their instruments, but redefined them. Improvisor, composer, author, teacher and inventor, he is known worldwide for redefining the flute, for creating revolutionary visions of its musical role to stand alongside the flute's established musics. Listening to him play solo has been likened to the experience of hearing a full orchestra.
His concerts include performances on a variety of flutes, drawn from his musical quiver of flute, flute with Dick's radical invention, the Glissando Headjoint®, alto, bass flutes in C and F, and the giant, stand-up contrabass flute.
Current performance projects include: solo recitals of original compositions for flutes, selected from Dick's thirty years of creating music – repertoire ranges from the now classic Afterlight to the speed-metal intensity of Satan, Oscillate My Metallic Sonatas
duo concerts with pianist Ursel Schlicht - collaborative repertoire and works by both artists
concerts with the "ambient/overdrive" Trio King Chubby, with Ed Bialek, keyboards and samplers and Will Ryan, handmade instruments and chanting. Dick's compositions have been recognized by a Koussevitzky Foundation Commission, a Guggenheim Fellowship, two Composer's Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and numerous other grants and commissions. Commissions for 2005-06 include works for the New Century Saxophone Quartet, flutist Elizabeth McNutt, a Meet the Composer Commission for a consortium of three woodwind quintets and a piccolo piece for the National Flute Association.
Dick lives in New York City and is on the faculty of New York University. He holds a B.A. from Yale University and an M.M. in composition from the Yale School of Music.
As one of the flute world's most respected masterclass teachers, he has been in residence in hundreds of universities, colleges and conservatories throughout the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. Dick's books on contemporary flute technique are the acknowledged standard bearers of the field.
A look at Dick's discography reveals a musician of major creative scope, with over 20 CDs of original solo and chamber works and collaborations with fellow creative musicians.
The newest, PHOTOSPHERE, a duo CD with pianist Ursel Schlicht will be released on Germany's NEMU Records early in 2006. Other CDs feature music by Telemann (the Fantasies for flute alone) and Jimi Hendrix.
For the past quarter century, Dick has been contributing to the evolution of the flute itself. He is collaborating with Brannen Brothers Flutemakers, the leading maker of fine flutes worldwide, in the production of his invention, the Glissando Headjoint®, which does for the flute what the "whammy bar" does for the electric guitar. Emerson Musical Instruments has produced the Robert Dick Model bass flute since the early 1990s.
