Joseph Wolverton    tenor
Wherever Joseph Wolverton performs, he garners acclaim from both critics and audiences alike, emerging as one of America's most gifted tenors--praised for his technique, fluid line, and expression. Performance reviews have described his voice as "shiny, limpid", "with a lucid, plangent timbre," and "notable for lyricism and refinement." Equally at home on both the operatic stage and in the concert hall, Joseph Wolverton's artistry traverses a broad spectrum of musical styles--from bel canto to modern--and he appears with leading orchestras and opera companies nationwide and in Europe.

Engagements in the current and future seasons include Alfred in Die Fledermaus (Fresno Opera) where he also participates in an Opera gala later this season, the title role in Faust (Utah Opera), Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca (Norrlandsoperan, Umeå, Sweden) (Hilton Head, South Carolina), Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor (Opera Carolina), Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Symfoniorkestern NorrlandsOperan and Christmas Pops Concerts led by Doc Severinsen with the Minnesota Orchestra and Milwaukee Symphony. Mr. Wolverton has also been honored with an invitation from The Amici di Verdi Society to perform a recital at the Salone di Barezzi in Busseto, Italy.

Although his diverse repertoire encompasses French Romanticism, Mozart, Operetta, and other genres, Joseph Wolverton is particularly distinguished in interpreting the lyric heroes of the Italian school, including those of Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, and Mascagni. The critically acclaimed recording of the latter composer's Silvano captures Wolverton's outstanding performance in the title role (Elysium Records). A Mascagni specialist, Mr. Wolverton's research in this area prompted the discovery and compilation of rare art songs by the composer. A project for performance and recording of the historic material is in the planning stages.

Highlights of Mr. Wolverton's performances during recent past seasons include:

Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly (New York City Opera, New Orleans Opera, and Baltimore Opera)
Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca (Dallas Opera and Opera Grand Rapids)
"Paul" in the U.S. premiere of Krasa's Verlogbung in Traum (Bethrothal in a Dream) at the Washington Opera

Reviews
"The one singer really at home in this style is Joseph Wolverton as Silvano. Gifted with a lucid, plangent timbre, his tenor runs the emotional gamut from gentle to defiant; he knows how to use portamento and other staples of verismo vocabulary, how to shade vowel coloration to give the words meaning, how to arch a phrase and taper a note. For his idiomatic delivery alone, the disc is well worth investigating."
Opera News

"In the title role Joseph Wolverton's conviction and classic Italian tenor sound prove real finds: with such credentials he should be heading for an international career."
Opera Now

"The vocal star is certainly Wolverton, who seems to have a splendid voice (my wife assumed he was Domingo) and uses it with skill and imagination. I shall keep my eye on him."
Fanfare

"Joseph Wolverton makes a fine Silvano, with a muscular delivery and smooth transitions between registers."
