Livia Sohn    violin
A rising star as an orchestral soloist and chamber musician, LIVIA SOHN has been described as "a bonafide virtuoso and stylistically sophisticated interpreter." Although only in her mid-20s, Ms. Sohn's career has included solo appearances with over 60 orchestras on five continents.

Ms. Sohn's 2001-2002 season included two European debuts, one with the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra with Music Director Rico Saccani, and the other with conductor Murry Sidlin and Holland's Limburgs Symphonie Orkest. Engagements during the 2002-2003 season include the Seattle Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, and a return appearance with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Sohn has been a guest soloist with the symphony orchestras of Cincinnati, Milwaukee, San Antonio, Oregon, Phoenix and Pittsburgh, the New York Chamber Symphony, the Chicago Sinfonietta, The Louisville Orchestra, the Aspen Chamber Orchestra the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Boston Pops Orchestra. She has performed with many eminent conductors, including Jesus Lopez-Cobos, James DePreist, Gerard Schwarz, Grant Llewellyn, William Eddins, Myung-Whun Chung and Lukas Foss.

Internationally, she has been a guest artist at Finland's Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and performed as soloist with the Cologne Philharmonic, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, The City of London Sinfonia conducted by Yehudi Menuhin, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra, and Korea's Seoul and Pusan Philharmonics. She performed a five city tour with South Africa's National Symphony and KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestras and has performed concerti and recitals in Nicosia, Cyprus, and Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Haifa, Israel.

A frequent guest artist at the Newport Music Festival, Ms. Sohn has also been a featured soloist in festivals at Brevard, Aspen, the Caramoor International Music Festival, New York City's Mostly Mozart Festival and Hawaii's Prince Albert Music Festival.

Ms. Sohn has appeared in recital on the prestigious series of New York City's Sylvia & Danny Kaye Playhouse of Hunter College, Chicago's Ravinia Festival, Cincinnati's Xavier University, the University of Connecticut, Connecticut College, Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and South Carolina's Peace Center for the Performing Arts.

In 1999, National Public Radio's "Performance Today" hosted Ms. Sohn as an Artist-in-Residence, during which she and pianist Benjamin Loeb gave live performances of a different program each day. Other career highlights include performing at the inaugural concerts of Harris Hall at Aspen, and her performance with Lukas Foss and the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra at the "11th Annual New Year's Eve Concert for Peace", held at New York City's Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine before an audience of 10,000.

Ms. Sohn gave her first public performance at age eight. In 1989, at age 12, she won First Prize in the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. Nurturing her technical and interpretive powers carefully, Ms. Sohn limited her concert performances to 25 per season while completing high school and college. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School in 1998, where she had studied under legendary violin pedagogue Dorothy DeLay from the age of seven.

Livia Sohn plays a J.B. Guadagnini, crafted in 1774 and on gracious loan to her from the Kumho Group of Seoul, Korea.
