Lehman Brothers Principal Sponsor of Juilliard Centennial

November 02, 2004
By Janet Kessin

Lehman Brothers, Inc. will be principal corporate sponsor of The Juilliard School’s yearlong centennial celebration during 2005 – 2006, contributing $1 million for tour performances by all three Juilliard divisions of music, dance, and drama in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC. Although in New York City Juilliard’s young artists typically appear in some 700 events during the academic year, the centennial marks the first time that Juilliard takes student performances in all its artistic disciplines cross-country, in a coordinated schedule of appearances.

Juilliard and Lehman Brothers share another important historical connection as well. It was funding from partner James Loeb at Kuhn Loeb and Co – later to merge under Lehman Brothers – that financed Juilliard’s founding in 1905 by then head of music for the New York City public schools, Dr. Frank Damrosch. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lehman Brothers Richard S. Fuld, Jr. said, “From its very beginning, Juilliard has set the standard for promoting excellence in the arts and for preparing the very best young talent to become the next generation of the world's leading artists. Lehman Brothers is proud to be supporting and partnering with Juilliard in its centennial year.” Juilliard’s centennial celebration begins with the School’s 100th commencement in May 2005 and concludes with its 101st in May 2006. Included are world premiere performances of more than thirty works of dance, drama and music, expressly commissioned by Juilliard for its centennial; a European summer tour to Lucerne, Switzerland, and to Aldeburgh, Basingstoke, and London, England, by the Juilliard Orchestra; exhibits from Juilliard’s one-of-a-kind manuscripts, photos, and papers; publications; national and international tributes to The Juilliard School by major ensembles and arts presenters; and a gala featuring renowned alumni as only Juilliard can boast. In acknowledging Lehman Brothers’ generous gift, Juilliard Chairman Bruce Kovner said, I speak for the entire Juilliard family - students, faculty and Trustees - in saying how pleased we are to welcome Lehman Brothers and its family of companies as our partner in celebrating 100 years of excellence in performing arts education. From Juilliard’s earliest days, its history has been linked with Lehman Brothers; we are indeed grateful to have this new and important tie between two leaders in their respective fields. Lehman Brothers’ support will allow Juilliard to present its first national tour, bringing performances by our gifted young artists in music, dance and drama to communities across the country.

Facilitated by school breaks in December 2005 and March 2006, the Juilliard Orchestra appears at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts led by Juilliard alumnus James Conlon in Washington, DC, and at Chicago Symphony Hall, Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, TX, the Irvine Barclay Theater in Irvine, CA, Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego, CA, and Disney Hall in Los Angeles, CA, led by Juilliard’s new director of conducting and orchestral studies, James DePreist. The fourth and graduating year of actors (Group 35) travel to Chicago and Los Angeles with their centennial-commissioned play by Craig Lucas and a work by Shakespeare.

The Juilliard Dance Ensemble performs in Chicago at the Joan W. and Irving B. Harris Theater for Music and Dance and in Los Angeles, with a centennial-commissioned work by Adam Hougland and important repertory pieces by William Forsythe and Mark Morris. A complete listing of Juilliard tour performances, including repertory and artists, is attached. Updates will be found at www.juilliard.edu/press.

Since opening in October 1905 as the Institute of Musical Art, Juilliard has established this country's standard for education in the arts. In 1924, the Juilliard Graduate School was created with funds bequeathed by textile merchant Augustus D. Juilliard. In 1926, the two previously separate schools began merging and by 1946, with merger completed, the name Juilliard School of Music became official.

In 1951, its Dance Division was established with combined education in contemporary and ballet technique. Juilliard moved to Lincoln Center in 1968 becoming its sole academic constituent, adding a four-year Drama program, thereby reflecting each of the Center’s performing constituents, and officially changing its name to The Juilliard School. In 1990, Juilliard opened its first residence hall, the Meredith Willson Residence Hall. In 2001, Juilliard broke new ground with the formation of the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, and creation of the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center. Added since, is Juilliard’s own undergraduate jazz curriculum. In addition to its college programs, Juilliard offers graduate and pre-college programs in music as well as a continuing education program for adults; community outreach programs for New York City metropolitan-area students, and specialized music programs for children from under-represented populations. Its young artists give 700 performances in New York City between September and May of each year. As it reaches the century mark, Juilliard is a vital and vibrant institution, with expanded student and alumni services; revised curriculum; new emphasis on liberal arts and humanities, community outreach, and the arts in education; greater interaction between the three Juilliard divisions of Music, Dance, and Drama; creation of a CD-ROM to teach music to children; and its long-range planning and capital Campaign for Juilliard. With its typical student body drawn from 44 states plus Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and 47 foreign countries, as it is this academic year, Juilliard has educated thousands of aspiring artists from around the world, and has expanded its mission to instill a strong sense of activism and arts advocacy in its students. Juilliard alumni are working artists who carry with them the highest standards of their profession throughout the world.
